80 jobs will be created as the energy solutions specialist opens a distribution center

Energy solutions companies, SMS plc, have opened their main distribution center in Barnsley following a move to new 52,000 square foot premises in Ashroyd Business Park, off Junction 36 of the M1.

SMS, headquartered in Glasgow, specializes in the installation, operation and management of carbon reduction technologies, including smart meters, electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and systems battery storage.

The company signed a 10-year lease on the commercial premises, with the creation of around 80 jobs on the new site.

Supply chain skills and support were provided by Enterprising Barnsley, the council’s business support service.

In addition to the distribution centre, SMS is also due to complete the construction of a second site in Barnsley this year.

The 40 megawatt (MW) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), built on land near Hopewell Street in Stairfoot, will support the UK’s electricity grid with essential flexibility services to accommodate the generation of renewable energy and strengthen the resilience of the national grid.

Councilor Robert Frost, Cabinet Supporting Member – Regeneration and Cultivation, said: ‘SMS is working closely with the private and public sectors to achieve the UK’s net zero carbon target by 2050, which we support as advice.

“It is great news that they have chosen Barnsley for their main distribution centre, which will see more jobs created in the borough.

“We wish SMS continued success and have been delighted to help them consolidate their growing operations under one roof in Barnsley.”

Geoff Schofield, Chief Financial Officer at SMS plc, added: “Our new logistics hub at Ashroyd Business Park provides a strategic location for our operations across the UK and will improve the efficiency of our warehousing and supply chain activities. of the last mile.

“It also strengthens our already significant presence in Yorkshire and the North of England, including our office in Doncaster, our customer contact center and our national engineering academy in Bolton.
